Email Address Change Policy
You may request a change to your Kellogg email address if one of the following applies:
- Your legal last name has changed.
- You commonly go by your middle name or an alternate first name.
Standard Email Address Format
Your email alias1 must contain your family's legal name and contain no more than 27 total characters.
Valid standard format
- (name you want to be addressed by) (dot) (family name) @kellogg.northwestern.edu
- Example: john.smith@kellogg.northwestern.edu
Valid alternate format
- john.smith1@kellogg.northwestern.edu or john.smith25@kellogg.northwestern.edu
1Your email alias is the segment of your email address before the @ symbol.
Display Name
Your display name is the name that will appear in Northwestern's web-based directory, the Outlook Address Book (Global Address List, or GAL), and instant messenger clients. Your first name can be changed to your preferred name as a replacement for your formal first name. Below are some examples of valid alternate formats for your display name.
Alternate display name options:
- Legal name: Johnathan Robert Smith
- Valid alternatives: Bob Smith, John Smith, Robert Smith
- Legal name: Margaret Elizabeth Johnson
- Valid alternatives: Maggie Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, Liz Johnson
Updating Names and Pronouns:
- Visit https://nuvalidate.northwestern.edu and sign in with your NetID and password.
- Click the “Edit Online Directory Information” tile on the homepage of NUValidate.
- Find the Name fields and Pronoun single-select list. Here, you can edit your name and pronouns, then click “Submit” at the bottom of the screen to save.
Submitting an Email Change Request
Faculty and staff, please contact KIS at kis@kellogg.northwestern.edu and include the following information:
- your NetID
- your current email address
- reason for change request
- your requested email address and display name (if applicable)
