Overview

KIS uses computer security settings to "push" Windows Updates automatically to Kellogg-managed Windows computers. This helps to ensure that Kellogg computers are on the latest, most secure version of Windows.  Many updates can be installed without you having to take any action, but some updates do require that you restart your computer. Since some security updates are critical to keeping your computer safe, we enabled new security settings to prompt you to restart your computer to complete the update process.

Normally, these updates get pushed to your computer on a regular basis whenever you connect to the Northwestern network. If you are working off-campus, as many of us are during this time, you will need to periodically connect to the Northwestern network via the GlobalProtect VPN - this will allow you to receive the latest updates and patches. We recommend that you connect to VPN once a week.

 

What to Expect

When a new update is ready and requires you to restart your computer, you will see the following message pop up on your computer:

The newest Windows feature update is here
It's ready to install - with new features and apps, this one could take a little  longer than other updates. You decide when to make it happen!
Ready? Restart now. Not ready? Pick a time that works for you.

When you see this message, you have three options:

• Restart now: this will close your open applications, restart your computer, and install the update(s). If you have any open documents or files, save your work before clicking on this option.
• Pick a time: schedule a time to install the updates.
• Snooze: provides a 3-day grace period before you are prompted to restart.

If you choose the Snooze option, you will get prompted again in three days to restart, pick a time, or snooze again. If you opt to snooze again, you will see the following message the next time you are prompted for updates:

Your organization manages your update settings
Your organization has set a deadline for applying updates to your device. Make sure to plug it in, and select Restart Now when you are ready.

When this message appears, it will give you the opportunity to save your work, close any open applications, and (if applicable) plug in your laptop prior to clicking on Restart now. Clicking the Restart now button will close any remaining open applications, restart your computer, and finish the update installation process.

 

FAQs

Q: Why do I have to connect to GlobalProtect VPN to get Windows updates?
A: If you're not working from on-campus, your computer has to connect via GlobalProtect VPN in order to be connected to the Northwestern network. Once you are on the Northwestern network, our systems can "see" your computer, identify any needed updates, and then push those updates to your computer.

Q: How many times can I "snooze" the update?
A: You can snooze the update twice. The third time you get the update reminder, you will have to save your work, close open applications, and click Restart now.
